Scott Drake Mustang has teamed up with Flaming River Industries to offer these brand new steering boxes. These all new boxes feature a quick 16:1 ratio for a very responsive and precise steering system, improved needle bearing design for smoother operation, direct bolt in, no modifications required, and with anti vibration collar on 1964 - 1966 boxes. The 16:1 ratio is the same ratio used on all high performance mustangs (GT, “K” car, Shelby, Mach 1 and Boss models). Power steering cars also feature the 16:1 ratio. Most of these boxes are worn out after 30 plus years of service. Flaming River’s new boxes eliminate play in steering wheel, hesitation and wandering, improves high speed tracking and overall sense of control. This is also an excellent upgrade for regular production Mustangs with manual steering that have the slower 19:1 ratio. Cars with 16:1 ratio requires 3 3/4 turns of the steering wheel lock to lock while 19:1 ratio require 4 5/8 turns lock to lock. 1967 Mustangs have a choice of 3 differet steering boxes: The Long shaft 1 inch sector shaft version was used on cars generally built before mid January 1967 and have a long fixed steering shaft. The short shaft 1-1/8 inch sector shaft version was in use from January 1967 onwards and used a "rag joint" to attach a collapsible steering shaft to the steering box. The sector shaft on these later boxes (the splined output shaft that connects to the pitman arm) is 1/8 inch thicker than the older one and will not interchange with 1965-1967 older pitman arms. The 3rd version has the shorter "rag joint" steering box, but retains the older style 1 inch sector shaft enabling a restorer to install a collapsible steering column into a car that has the older 1" sector shaft setup. Some transition cars built in January and February of 1967 had the newer collapsible columns with a few mutant short steering boxes with a 1 inch sector shaft... so customers with transition period cars may have to swap pitman arms if they order the wrong steering box.
