The ring gear has teeth which engage with the starter motor allowing the engine to crank over and start. Most 1965-1968 Mustangs received the smaller 157 Tooth Flywheels and Flexplates, but some Mustangs came from the factory with the 164 Tooth setup which has a larger diameter and uses a completely different bellhousing. Please make sure you have this more common 157 Tooth version before ordering!!!
